Atlanta gears up for opening of new stadium

Detailed security and traffic plans have been put in place for the grand opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons NFL and Atlanta United soccer teams.

WSB-TV in the city reports that the Falcons will take on the Arizona Cardinals for their first preseason home game in the new stadium and that fans say the facility, with its state-of-the-art design and technology, is “a marvel”.

The new stadium seats more than 73,000 people and has about 23,000 parking spaces within a 20-minute walk.

The stadium cost around US$1.6 bn and will host the Superbowl in 2019.

The seating capacity can be expanded to up to 83,000 but, by utilising an innovative mechanised curtaining system for the stadium’s mid and upper bowls, capacity for events like family shows, concerts and Atlanta United (MLS) games can be reduced to optimise the appropriate event setting.
