Brazilian football club Atlético Mineiro has broken ground on its new stadium, the MRV Arena.
The new venue will have a capacity for 46,000 fans and is located in the California neighbourhood, in the northwest region of Belo Horizonte.
Construction work is expected to last for up to 30 months, with the stadium expected to open at the end of 2022. Club president Sergio Sette Câmara said:
This is a very special moment for Atlético fans. The dream of having a stadium of their own is coming to fruition. It is a great gift and a huge pride for all fans.
Atlético Mineiro are looking to create a multipurpose venue, which will be able to attract a variety of live shows and events to the stadium. It will have 40 bars, 68 suites and 2,400 parking spaces.
The 130,000m2 site that will house the stadium was donated by businessman Ruben Menin, founder of MRV Engenharia.
The design of the arena is the responsibility of the architect Bernardo Farkasvölgyi.
