Doha to stage Italian soccer showpiece

The Qatari capital of Doha will stage the 2014 edition of Italian soccer’s Supercoppa Italiana.

Lega Serie A, the body which runs the top tiers of Italian club soccer, has confirmed a deal with the Qatar Football Association for the hosting rights to the mid-season showpiece. This year’s game will pit champions Juventus against Coppa Italia holders Napoli on 22nd December. The initial agreement is for a single year.

Serie A President, Maurizio Beretta, made the announcement at a press conference in Paris along with the Qatar Football Association General Secretary Saoud Al Mohannadi.

The match is usually staged in August as the curtain-raiser to the Italian season and has been played abroad several times in the recent past, including in Libya, the United States and in Beijing, which hosted the Super Cup in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Mauricio Beretta, the Lega Serie A President, said at the Paris press conference:

We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to export our Supercoppa to an interesting and prestigious country like Qatar.
