Football authorities punish safety breaches

Senegal’s next home soccer World Cup qualifier against Angola will be held in Guinea. Senegal has been banned by the Confederation of African Football from playing matches in its national stadium for one year after fans rioted towards the end of an African Nations Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast in Dakar last October – with players and away fans seeking refuge in the centre circle as Senegal supporters started fires in the stands and threw missiles.

UEFA has threatened to make the Italian club Lazio play a European home match in an empty stadium after its fans’ racist behaviour at Europa League matches against Tottenham and Maribor. UEFA fined Lazio $190,000 but the stadium sanction:

has been suspended for a probationary period of two years.
