Galway Races and Sword celebrate 15-year partnership

Sword, a Republic of Ireland-based crowd safety and security company, is celebrating its 15th consecutive year as the only contracted private security company at the seven-day Galway Races.

The Summer Races has a long and exciting history as Ireland’s foremost horseracing event of the calendar, and has been commemorated in a host of songs and poems, perhaps most famously by W. B. Yeats in ‘At Galway Races’. Its location is also one of Ireland’s most beautiful, on the edge of Galway Bay.

Diarmuid Smyth, CEO of Sword, was Security Manager for the event, and he commented:

We employed hundreds of our staff on site, both stewards and licensed staff, providing a safe and secure environment – but also acting as a host on behalf of the organiser, ensuring everyone feels welcome.

The Galway Races is a festival for everyone, traditionally running for seven consecutive days starting from the last Monday in July each year. Highlights of the Summer Festival include Ladies’ Day and Family Day and a very popular Mad Hatters’ Competition.

Sword’s international operations, headed by recently appointed Chief Operating Officer Bert van Horck, now include an assignment at Reading FC’s Madejski Stadium on the opening day of the new Football League season.
