GL events Seating and Stadia installed the grandstand seating along the Sochi circuit to ensure spectators had the perfect view of all the motorsport action at the inaugural Russian Grand Prix.
Held in Sochi on 12th October, this was the country’s first F1 Grand Prix in more than a century with the circuit being built around the Sochi Olympic Park coastal region. The circuit constructors purchased five raised grandstands offering 30,000 seats, all with fantastic sight lines of the track, from GL events Seating & Stadia.
At 5.9km (3.7miles) long, the Sochi circuit is the third-longest circuit on the F1 calendar, behind Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Silverstone in Great Britain. The grandstand seating is positioned at key turns within the circuit, including the first corner, which often sees the biggest battle as drivers push for that early lead.
The circuit, which runs in a clockwise direction, consists of 12 right and six left-hand corners, and combines both high-speed and technical sections. The F1 cars reached a maximum speed of 320km/h on the 650m straight between the first and second turns, with an average lap speed of around 215km/h.
Chris Mansell, Operations Director for GL events Seating & Stadia, said prior to the race:
With grandstands also positioned at turns two, four, five and six, spectators won’t miss any of the action as the sight lines around the circuit are excellent. If the race is as good as the view, it will be one hell of a race!
The grandstands are fitted with the C View Plus Seating System, developed by GL events Seating & Stadia for the London 2012 Olympics, with three of the five stands furnished with disabled platforms.
Hermann Tilke, the renowned circuit architect who designed the track, also commented prior to the race:
The circuit is going to be very fast and technical and offers a number of interesting features. It is a fantastic facility with a great atmosphere and it will be outstanding, as the circuits run through the Olympic Park.
