MLS side, D.C. United, have released new renderings of the Populous-designed soccer stadium on its Buzzard Point site. The renderings feature a partial roof over the stands, in a stadium that is expected to have a capacity of between 18,000 to 23,000.
Populous Senior Principals Jon Knight and Joe Spear have said that they “wanted to create a stadium that would bring fans close to the action”.
The Club’s new home may be several years away from completion, but the latest renderings show what can be expected from the Buzzard Point project; with the new stadium expected to open in 2018.
The new facility will be within walking distance of the home of Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals and the Navy Yard Ballpark station of the Washington Metro.
The city and club announced in September that the city had filed for eminent domain to acquire several acred of land Buzzard Point to be used for the new stadium.
The Club has been playing out of RFK Stadium since its inception in 1996 and will continue to do so until the new stadium is complete.
