Ajax FC have installed a new pitch at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam in time for the start of the new season.
The PlayMaster pitch from Tarkett Sports was transported to the stadium in 11 meter rolls, each weighing about 1,800kg.
The turf at the Johan Cruijff ArenA is replaced once a year and during the football season, a special grass team maintains the pitch on a daily basis, providing food, water, lighting, aeration, mowing and repairing the grass.
The pitch is closely monitored with sensors to assess the health and quality of the field.
Under the grass are 15 sensors that monitor the quality of the soil on which the grass must grow. In addition, the growth climate is maintained with a weather station on the field and four weather stations in the roof.
On the roof and on the weather station on the field, light sensors establish whether sufficient light is on the grass. This helps to determine whether the pitch requires more or less water and where and when the turf grow-lighting needs to be switched on.
Since the 2016-2017 season, the ArenA has worked with a hybrid turf (a mix of 90% real grass and some artificial grass).
By adding artificial grass blades to the real grass, the pitch is made stronger and it also provides more stability, grip, less damage and faster recovery.
