Philippines set to make FIBA World Cup 2019 bid

According to the Philippine Press, the country will be bidding for the rights to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

The Philippines is currently participating in this year’s tournament, taking place in Spain, after a 36-year absence, having participated for the first and last time back in 1978.

SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President, Manny V. Pangilinan, said he is as “determined” and as “confident as ever that his dream to bring the 2019 FIBA World Cup to the Philippines could become a reality”. He said the successful hosting of last year’s FIBA-Asia championships has raised the Philippines’ profile in the eyes of world-governing body FIBA, while the construction of two impressive stadia will give the country the infrastructure needed to host an event of such magnitude.
Pangilinan announced via his Twitter account (@iamMVP) last month that he has already received documents to bid for the 2019 FIBA World Cup:

Recvd Bid Docs for 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Let’s bid! Let’s host! Laban Pilipinas.

The Head of Metro Pacific Investments, Pangilinan pointed to the new Philippine Arena (pictured above) – the world’s largest capacity indoor arena – in Bulacan as well as another stadium being built in Cebu by the SM Group of Companies which, combined with the Mall of Asia Arena and the historic Smart Araneta Coliseum, could serve as world-class venues for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

But more than the infrastructure, the telecommunications mogul said it is the Filipinos’ passion for basketball that will be the selling point of the bid for the 2019 showpiece.
