The King’s Hall in Belfast will stage the opening ceremony of this summer’s World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) in Northern Ireland.
The organisers were unable to persuade the Irish Rugby Football Union to stage the opening at Ravenhill Stadium, the home of Ulster Rugby. Ravenhill is being revamped and breaking into construction for the event proved impossible.
Approval for the King’s Hall in south Belfast has now been given by the 2013 WPFG Board, Northern Ireland’s Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, and the WPFG Federation.
2013 WPFG Chief Executive John Tully said:
The opening ceremony is the key official event during the Games, providing an opportunity to officially welcome athletes and their families to the host city.
It is one of the many requirements of the World Police and Fire Games Federation that this ceremony is held to mark the beginning of 10 days of competition and camaraderie.
