RAI Amsterdam begins on flexible and sustainable facility

RAI Amsterdam will begin construction of a new, flexible and sustainable conference, meeting and office building on the northern side of Amsterdam RAI in October. It will open on 1 May 2015 and will not disturb any event activities.

RAI previewed its plans for this building at the Stadia & Arena conference some years ago and it’s now about to go in the ground. The new conference and meeting facilities sit alongside Hall 1, Amsterdam RAI’s largest exhibition hall, and the adjacent Hall 4/5, making it already ideal for large exhibitions. A quality restaurant will represent the finishing touch for the versatility of the new building.

The building will aim to achieve a BREEAM-NL excellent level. This sustainability certificate is managed by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) and focuses on various features, such as natural means – e.g., thermal energy storage (TES) or solar panels – for the heating and cooling of facilities. Next to the Atrium on the office floors, the building will feature a vertical greenhouse across its height on the southern side where vegetables and spices can be grown for use in the restaurant. In this way the meeting, conference and office activities will be complemented by urban farming.
