Second home for Toronto hockey still alive

Markham, Ontario, Canada (a suburb of Toronto) council has voted to go ahead with its plans to help fund a $325 million arena project. The council is considering becoming a partner in a cost-sharing arrangement with GTA Sports and Entertainment and its financial backer, Remington Group.

GTA Sports has hopes that Markham might host a NHL expansion team and feasibility studies show a strong local market for hockey. The Toronto Star reports that several residents opposed the use of taxpayers’ money and asked the council to consider the case of Glendale in Arizona where the arena is home to a financially struggling NHL team.
