Stade de Luxembourg up and running

The new Stade de Luxembourg will hold its first official football match in September after a test event was successful.

The Luxembourg municipal authorities said that the first football test event match held at the new venue on 14 July 2021, in real-world conditions, was a marked success, leaving all stakeholders satisfied both in terms of the technical facilities and the event organisation.

The first official match will be on 1 September 2021, when Luxembourg will play Azerbaijan.

This game will mark the stadium’s official opening.

UEFA officials congratulated the City of Luxembourg on its fantastic new stadium and the successful management of the test event match in the face of adverse weather conditions.

The stadium is designed to hold a capacity of 9,386 spectators with fully covered seating for sporting events, and can hold up to 15,000 spectators for concerts.

The stadium was designed by local architectural firm Beng Architectes Associés in conjunction with the Hamburg based Gerkan, Marg and Partners.

The stadium has a hybrid grass playing surface. It will host Luxembourg’s national football and rugby teams and is a UEFA Category 4 stadium, allowing it to host international matches.
