Multisport surfaces for University Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile

The private University Diego Portales (UDP) in Santiago, Chile, is one of the best in the country and opened a new campus in March this year. To ensure that the students can really burn off their energy after classes, a new sports ground with a running track and playing field on which both football and hockey can be played was installed at the same time.

The new facility was planned by the leading Chilean architect Mathias Klotz, who is Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design at UDP. It was constructed by the South American contractor Resinsa, a partner of Polytan.

The variable moods of the Chilean weather demanded a particular kind of turf, which is why the decision was made in favour of LigaGrass turf from Polytan|STI.

The turf has proved to be extremely hardwearing and particularly soft. Thanks to its high-quality 100% PE formulation, the high-performance football turf is substantially softer than other crimped synthetic turfs, so the students benefit from natural ball rolling behaviour. Furthermore, it can be used for hockey practices, mainly for the women’s team of the university. The running track was equipped with a Polytan M surface.

Venues in China have made it a busy year so far for Polytan and its long-standing partner company C. Melchers GmbH & Co. Polytan fitted out two stadiums in Nay Pyi Taw City (Myanmar) with WS running tracks back in January, followed by the installation of a further WS track in Mandalay for the South-East Asian Games 2013.

In May, a two-tone LigaTurf football pitch was laid and the installed running track renewed at Beijing Jiaotong University (China). After the running track at Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics last year, this is the second track in brilliant Hertha Blue that Polytan has installed in Beijing.

Work began in May on two projects in Dalian (China) for the China National Games, which are due to be held in September. At Liaoning Maritime Sports School the Polytan team installed two MegaTurf Cool Plus hockey pitches, one of which is certified to FIH Global standards – a first for Polytan in China. The facility has also been extended by two further Poligras hockey pitches by STI.

When it comes to running tracks, those in charge have also opted for Polytan: at Dalian Sports Center they have installed a circular track in the main stadium, a warm-up track and two indoor areas – nearly 30,000 square metres of the Polytan M system in total. The circular track in the main stadium is IAAF Class I-certified.
