I wanted to take this opportunity to wish all of our advertisers, contributors and readers a very happy New Year and say that myself and all the team look forward to bringing you all of the latest news on stadia, arena, sporting events and venue projects throughout 2015.

This year is another exciting one both for the sports venue sector that we serve, as well as for ourselves, with a host of stadium and arena projects due to open their doors, and others to commence. We are also very excited to be launching PanStadia & Arena Management magazine’s App and Enhanced Facility Watch, which will provide you with even more vital information on all of the latest sports venue developments and tender news from around the globe. (NB: You can view the 2015 Media Kit online at www.psam.uk.com which details all of the stadia and arena projects to be featured in 2015, as well as the specific industry sectors/topics to be featured in each edition.)

Our forthcoming Q1/Spring ’15 edition will also be a historic issue, as it will include the inaugural ‘Playing Surfaces Buyers Guide’; our independent guide to the leading companies involved in all aspects of natural, hybrid and artificial turf playing surface design, engineering, installation and maintenance, which we are producing in association with ESTO.

We are compiling this Guide to especially benefit our readers in emerging and developing countries by presenting them with a definitive guide as to the leading companies that they should be speaking to in terms of their playing surfaces needs. The directory will also include some independently commissioned articles covering all aspects of the industry based on feedback from our readers over recent years. It will take the same format as our hugely successful Architects, Engineers & Specialist Contractors (AEC) Directory that was included in our Spring ’14 edition and which remains online at: http://flickread.com/edition/html/index.php?pdf=544100a7e845a&w=1000&h=1414&p=51 with regular additions and updates.

In addition, this September will see the second edition of our ‘live’ event, the Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific conference and exhibition. We welcomed 500+ top-ranking attendees to last year’s inaugural event and we are expecting even more to attend this year’s event, once again being held at the Singapore Sports Hub from September 28-30, 2015. Exhibition space is selling out fast and we are now accepting speaker requests and asking you to advise as to the topics you would like to see covered during this world-leading event.

If you have any news you would like to share either about a sports venue development, whether it be a new build or revamp, an innovative product, service or solution, then please contact myself, Katie McIntyre, either via email at: katie@aladltd.co.uk or contact me in the Irish office on Tel: +353 (0) 44 9335212.

In regards to speaker opportunities and possible topics for discussion at our Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific event, please contact either myself or Sam Wibrew via email at: sam@aladltd.co.uk

For all the latest information both on the magazine and the show, please ensure to regular check out www.psam.uk.com (where you will find digital editions of the latest issue, as well as back-issues) and www.saevents.uk.com

On behalf of all the team, we look forward to working with you through 2015 and here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous 12 months!

Best wishes and thank you for your continued support!

Kind regards,

HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein’s FIFA Presidential candidacy adds new significance to Soccerex Asian Forum

Comments Off on HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein’s FIFA Presidential candidacy adds new significance to Soccerex Asian Forum

HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan’s announcement that he will run for the FIFA Presidency in May significantly increases the importance of the Soccerex Asian Forum taking place April 14-15, 2015. The FIFA Vice President for Asia and President of the Jordan Football Association will open the event that returns to the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre on the Dead Sea, just weeks before the FIFA Presidential elections take place.

HRH Prince Ali will be standing for the role against incumbent Sepp Blatter and former FIFA Executive Jerome Champagne.

HRH Prince Ali commented in a statement on jfa.com.jo:

I am seeking the presidency of FIFA because I believe it is time to shift the focus away from administrative controversy and back to sport.

He added:

The message I heard, over and over, was that it is time for a change. The world’s game deserves a world-class governing body – an International Federation that is a service organization and a model of ethics, transparency and good governance.

The FIFA Presidency elections will generate worldwide interest and the Asian Forum represents a final opportunity for senior industry figures from Asia and afar to come together ahead of the elections to engage and discuss the development of the game.

HRH Prince Ali’s participation at the Asian Forum continues a trend of the world game’s leading figures using Soccerex as a platform to connect with the industry’s most influential businessmen and women. 2014 saw FIFA President Sepp Blatter, CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb, FIFA Vice-President Jim Boyce and Vice-President of the Asian Football Confederation Moya Dodd address delegates at Soccerex events around the world and Prince Ali’s involvement at the opening ceremony of the Asian Forum ensures that 2015 will pick up where 2014 left off.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie commented:

We are hugely honoured and privileged to be working again with His Royal Highness, Prince Ali at our 2015 Asian Forum.  He is so passionate about the game and his visionary work with the Asian Football Development Project has had significant impact on football and the opportunities it provides throughout Asia. We are proud to be working alongside him, the AFDP and the Jordan Football Association and hope that in some small way the Asian Forum will help contribute towards his efforts to develop football across the continent.

Soccerex African Forum will address all aspects of player development

Comments Off on Soccerex African Forum will address all aspects of player development

Pepsi, SAFA and Craig Bellamy Foundation are amongst those who will address player development at Soccerex African Forum, 4-5 November, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Africa has a rich history of developing stars of the world game and providing life opportunities through football. The Soccerex African Forum will look at how this reputation has been formed with a number of sessions focused on player development in Africa.

On the opening afternoon of the Forum, the Pepsi Football Academy will be hosting an exclusive session focusing on the work done by the facility in providing the most talented and skilled youngsters with the opportunity to progress their career within football. The academy, based in Nigeria, provides a platform for young players to train and play in a disciplined environment whilst ensuring each student acquires skills that exceed football ability alone.

There will also be a presentation titled ‘Developing the Next Generation of Football Talent’ featuring former Sierra Leone coach, Johnny McKinstry, CEO of SAFA Development Agency Dr. Robin Peterson and ASEC Mimosas General Manager Benoit You.

Appointed in January 2010, McKinstry is the Academy Manager of the Craig Bellamy Foundation, Sierra Leone’s only full-time elite football academy. McKinstry has previously been named ‘UK Grassroots Coach of the Year’ by Manchester United FC for his work within the football industry and his expertise in ‘Outstanding Team Motivation’. The former Pre-Academy Coach at New York Red Bulls between 2007 and 2009 also worked at the Right to Dream Academy based in Ghana which has been voted amongst the top 15 academies in world football by Bleacher Report.

Upon Dr. Peterson’s appointment to the role of CEO of SAFA Development Agency in 2012, SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani declared that Peterson would be taking responsibility for driving SAFA’s vision to be consistently in the top three sides in Africa and the top 20 in the world by 2022. Having previously worked on a SAFA World Cup bid as well as being CEO of Premier Soccer League at the start of the century, Peterson is a well qualified appointment and will bring great experience to the panel.

As General Manager of ASEC Mimosas since June 2011, Benoît You is in charge of carrying out the club’s strategy as defined by the administrative board, heads the management team and oversees all financial and commercial aspects within the club. ASEC have an impressive history of player development and can boast the likes of Yaya Toure, Gervinho, Salomon Kalou and Emmanuel Eboue amongst their alumni.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie said:

It is very exciting to have some of the most influential figures in African player development presenting at our African Forum. The work that has been done by Johnny, Robin and Benoit as well as the Pepsi Academy has been instrumental in enhancing the growth of youngsters across the continent and I have no doubt the presentations will provide some excellent insight into the world of talent development.

Comments Off on Dates announced for Stadia and Arena Asia Pacific 2015 event

The dates for our Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific 2015 event have now been announced, so make sure to mark September 28-30, 2015, in your diaries.

This industry-leading show, which is basically the ‘live’ version of PanStadia & Arena Management – the sector’s #1 magazine – will once again be hosted at the Singapore Sports Hub with our local event partner MPI (part of the Pico group). Highlighting the success of this year’s event, is the fact that over 50% of the 2014 exhibitors have already confirmed their stands for next year!

In terms of last month’s inaugural event, we welcomed more than 500 top-ranking attendees (marking our biggest event yet) and not just from the Asia Pacific region but from wider afield, with delegations from the Qatar Supreme Committee, Malaysia Stadium Corporation, Japan Sport Council, Sport Singapore, AEG China, The NEC GroupSportsHub PtePico and ABRARENAS Brazilian Association of Arena Operators & Suppliers, to name but a few.

There were also a significant number of sports architects in attendance, including 360 Architecture, AECOM, Arup, Arup Associates, Billings Jackson Design, Cox Architecture, DP Architects, HKS, HOK, Gensler, KSS, Rider Levett Bucknall and Populous.

And, some 60+ industry-elite speakers – which included Philippe Collin Delavaud, CEO, SportsHub Pte Ltd; Brian Morris, CEO, Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust; Brigadier General (NS) Lim Teck Yin, CEO, Sport Singapore; Ronnie Hurst, Project Director for the new Perth Stadium for the Western Australian Department of Sport & Recreation; Mark Collins, Managing Director, Global Spectrum Asia; and Eric Cuthbertson, VP of Operations, AEG China – shared their invaluable insights during the 3-day event.

Topics under the microscope during the conference included Sports Venue Management & Operations; New Approaches to Pitch Performance, Management & Maintenance; Revenue Generation; Roofing Innovations; as well as Safety & Security; and the many key sports projects to be highlighted included the Singapore Sports Hub; the new Perth Stadium; Philippine Arena; Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground redevelopment; Japan’s sports venue development programme and its centrepiece, the new National Stadium; the new Atlanta Falcons NFL stadium; Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium renovations.

The event’s opening reception was held in the exhibition hall, which provided attendees with the opportunity to network and do business with the 50+ industry-leading exhibitors and sponsors that were showcasing their latest products, services and projects. This was rounded off by a special behind-the-scenes tour of the new 55,000-seat National Stadium, sponsored by Dallmeier and Vector Foiltec, who presented their responsibilities on the project alongside the Design Team (AECOM, Arup, Arup Associates and DP Architects) and NCR Corporation. Attendees were also treated to a second evening networking reception, sponsored by Delaware North Companies, during which everyone was able to sample local  delicacies, all washed down with the ubiquitous Singapore Slings.

Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific 2015 is primed to attract an even larger global audience of the sectors key decision-makers and with over 50% of the exhibition hall stands already booked, we expect it to be sold-out sooner rather than later, so we would strongly recommend that any companies interested in exhibiting or sponsoring next year’s event contact us sooner rather than later!

We also welcome end-users (i.e. stadium, arena, sporting event & venue owners and operators) to contact us if you would like to present your sporting event’s or venue’s latest developments or indeed share your insights in terms of best-practice, challenges, solutions and lessons learnt during one of the many roundtable debates. FYI: As the event is a ‘live’ version of PanStadia & Arena Management, many of the roundtable debates will also be published in the magazine.

Inaugural Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific event heralded a huge success

Comments Off on Inaugural Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific event heralded a huge success

Last week’s inaugural Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific event, which was held at the Singapore Sports Hub, has been heralded as a HUGE success by all who attended.

The 50+ industry-leading exhibitors and sponsors were able to network with the 500+ high-ranking attendees, which included a top-level delegation from the Qatar Supreme Committee. Mike Tod RAIA, PMC Design Manager, CH2MHill, working for Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Legacy & Delivery, commented:

Thank you for organising such a well-run and interesting event.

Delegates also benefitted from a comprehensive conference programme, during which they heard invaluable insights from over 60 industry-elite speakers, including Ronnie Hurst, Western Australia Department of Sport & Recreation, who, as Project Director on the new Perth Stadium, detailed the venue’s recently unveiled design and timelines; Philippe Collin Delavaud, CEO, SportsHub Pte Ltd., (former CEO of Stade de France), shared his experiences during the “Revenue Generation: maximising returns for your sporting venue or event”; Brian Morris, CEO, Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust, shared his insights during the Closing Keynote on “Major Sporting Events: challenges, lessons learnt and considerations for upcoming event organisers”; and Yoshihiro Kizawa, Vice President & Executive Director, Japan Sport Council, detailed the centrepiece of Japan’s huge venue development programme, the new National Stadium, which is scheduled for completion in 2019.

Many of the major sports architects present also shared details on their latest stand-out projects, including Populous, who spoke about Philippine Arena and the changing face of arenas; Cox Architecture detailed Sydney Cricket & Sports Grounds’ redevelopment; KSS outlined Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium redevelopment; and 360 Architecture highlighted the new Atlanta Falcons NFL stadium.

Eoin Billings, Partner at Billings Jackson Design, who sat on the “Safety & Security considerations in sporting venues: from design to operation” roundtable, commented post-show:

Thank you for an excellent event and for driving what was a very interesting discussion. It is clear that the design community needs to be much closer to the operational teams…much, much closer…in meeting their needs. This discussion could be the basis for a whole event.

A large number of attendees took advantage of the special behind-the-scenes tour of Singapore’s new National Stadium, which boasts the world’s largest free-spanning domed roof, along with an innovative air-cooling system across all 55,000-seats, as Arup Principal, Mike King, and Arup Associates’ Director, Clive Lewis explained. Other contractors involved in the project, including AECOM, DP Architects, and NCR also shared their insights, along with Tour Sponsors, Dallmeier’s Roland Meier and Vector Foiltec’s Matthew Penrose and Angus Macleod.

Highlighting the success of this year’s show is the fact that a significant number of exhibitors have already confirmed their stands for next year’s Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific event and, of all the delegates that completed end-of-show questionnaires, every single one confirmed that they will also be returning for next year’s event, which will once again be held at the Singapore Sports Hub, September 28-30 2015.

Speaking about Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific 2014, Roger Hooker, Senior Director at Integrated Security Consultants (ISC) – who also sat on the “Safety & Security considerations in sporting venues: from design to operation” roundtable – commented:

Firstly, congratulations on your inaugural event here in Singapore. It was an interesting few days and great to see so many international delegates here – and only yards from our new office! I thought it really proved how there is a healthy thirst to discuss and explore opportunities in Asia, so I’m delighted you are returning next year. Thank you for the very kind invitation to join the panel, and share some of our experience with your delegates. There are lessons to be shared when you step off a plane and set up to trade overseas – and particular lessons to be learnt in Asia.

Myself and all the team, including all the crew at our local event partner, MP International/Pico, would like to thank our sponsors, speakers, exhibitors and attendees for making Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific 2014 such a great success, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you all back to Singapore next year, along with many new faces!

To enquire about speaker, exhibitor, attendee or sponsor opportunities, please email: katie@aladltd.co.uk

FYI: A full post-show review, including details on those who took part, will appear in our forthcoming Showcase Special edition of PanStadia & Arena Management, with attendee stats and further information to be published in this Friday’s digest.

With a combined experience of working on thousands of sporting events & venue projects all over the world, Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific 2014 is set to deliver the strongest line-up of design experts ever assembled for a sports venue conference.

By attending this event, you can network with senior principals from a large number of world-famous architectural firms and design houses, including:

360 Architecture is on the design team for a retractable-roof multipurpose stadium in Atlanta for the NFL Atlanta Falcons, as Chris Lamberth will discuss during Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific. Other notable current projects include the renovation of Sun Life Stadium; the Rogers Place Arena, AT&T Center renovation; the design of Cisco Field; and a new stadium for the MLS’ San Jose Earthquakes. HOK recently announced it has agreed to acquire 360 Architecture.

AECOM provided masterplanning and landscape architecture for the Singapore Sports Hub, as company Principal, Jonathan Rose, will discuss during the conference. And Principal of AECOM Global Sports, J Parrish, will sit on the Sports Venue Architecture panel. AECOM is currently working on many other sports venue projects, including the 40,000-capacity Al Rayyan Stadium (as Project Manager) and Al Wakrah Stadium (as Design Consultant), both FIFA World Cup 2022™ host venues.

Arup has been involved in bringing to life some of the world’s most iconic sports projects, like Beijing’s National Aquatics Centre (Water Cube) and National Stadium (Bird’s Nest), as well as Munich’s Allianz Arena and Melbourne’s AAMI Park. Most recently, Arup served as lead architect for the sports venues and lead engineers for the precinct at the Singapore Sports Hub, as Clive Lewis, Associate Director at Arup Associates’ and Mike King, Principal at Arup, will discuss. Mike King will also share his insights during the Roofing Innovations & Challenges in Modern Stadia panel session.

Cox Architecture is currently working on the masterplan and redevelopment of Sydney Cricket and Sports Grounds at Moore Park. This project will be highlighted by the firm’s Director, Alastair Richardson, during the conference and Alastair will also be a member of the Sports Venue Architecture panel. Twelve FA Presidents to gather in Jordan for next month’s Soccerex Asian Forum

Comments Off on Twelve FA Presidents to gather in Jordan for next month’s Soccerex Asian Forum

A total of twelve national Football Association Presidents have so far confirmed their attendance at next month’s Soccerex Asian Forum, taking place May 13-14 on the banks of the Dead Sea in Jordan in partnership with the Asian Football Development Project (AFDP).

With the ultimate decision-makers for football in a dozen different countries attending, the Forum represents an unrivalled opportunity for businesses looking to expand their network and to present themselves to these industry leaders. Taking into account new FIFA regulations on host city selection for future World Cups, these administrators will also have a say in some of the biggest decisions in world football.

Leading the list of FA Presidents will be HRH Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein (Jordan), Sunil Gulati (United States of America), H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani (Qatar), and Chung Mong-gyu (Korea), alongside FA Presidents from the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Palestine, Yemen, Lebanon, Kyrgyz Republic, Papua New Guinea, and the Honorary President for Norway, with many more to confirm shortly.

In addition, there will be senior representatives from the rest of Asia, including AFC Vice-President and Football Federation Board Member, Moya Dodd, All-India Football Federation General Secretary, Kushal Das, and Singapore FA General Secretary, Winston Lee, amongst colleagues from Turkmenistan and Bangladesh.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie said: “The quality and quantity of the attendees singing up for the Forum is truly outstanding. As the key decision makers behind commercial and development projects for their own FA’s as well as international matters such as future World Cup host selection, these Presidents are amongst the most important footballing administrators on the planet.

“In addition to the national associations that have signed up for the Forum, there will be a number of premier footballing institutions, including FIFA, The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, The FA, La Liga, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, the Japan Football Association and Galatasaray to name a few.”

The Forum, held in partnership with the AFDP – founded and chaired by HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein – will bring together the leading figures from the world of Asian football, as well as other international football experts to discuss the development of the game across Asia. The conference agenda will include a review of the opportunities for growth and the challenges facing Asian football.

Wembley adds to trophy cabinet of green awards

Comments Off on Wembley adds to trophy cabinet of green awards

Wembley has collected the UK’s Green Tourism GoldStar award in the Conferencing and Events Venue Category. Wembley was shortlisted for the award as a result of the high score achieved during the Green Tourism audit which took place during 2012. The finalists represented the top 3% of Green Tourism businesses in the UK. At the start of the year Wembley was the first stadium to achieve the highest category – three stars – in the Industry Green certification, due to continued and improved environmental performance. It was noted that “the Stadium’s communications with staff as well as with the audience and supply chain have been exceptional.” James Huartson, Sustainability Manager said:

The successes at the Stadium are due to the continued work carried out by the Green Team which is a coalition of people from all departments across the site, The FA and partner companies. The Green Team was set up to develop, implement and manage the Environmental Management System for the Stadium. The Green Team promotes campaigns and achievements to all staff to ensure targets are achieved and our performance continues to improve.

To top these awards, Wembley Stadium has now become one of the first organisations to achieve the Carbon Trust Waste Standard. This independent standard certifies organisations that measure, manage and reduce their waste output, year on year. The Stadium demonstrated a 25.7% absolute reduction in the carbon intensity of waste since 2010, achieved through improved recycling segregation and waste saved from landfill and sent instead to a waste-to-energy plant. Roger Maslin, Managing Director at Wembley, said:

Since the new Wembley Stadium opened we have been monitoring and assessing our environmental impacts and setting targets for improvement. Waste is one of our most significant impacts, and consequently, staff and contract partners on site have all worked together to improve our waste management system to reduce these impacts. The Wembley Stadium vision states that we are committed to demonstrating leadership in environmental sustainability and so we are very proud to be one of the first organisations to achieve the Carbon Trust Waste Standard.

Catch up with Wembley’s incredible year in the Winter Showcase Special issue of PanStadia & Arena Management magazine.

Get over to Durban in South Africa for 1-2 October’s Soccerex African Forum for an intensive dose of football business on the continent. The second part of the workshop is ‘Managing Municipal Owned Sports Facilities & Win Win Lease Agreements’ in which Greg Fredericks, General Manager, 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy trust and Vusi Mazibuko, Stadium Manager, Moses Mabhida Stadium will discuss how municipalities are supported when it comes to building local sporting facilities and how they should be managed to ensure that these venues can deliver safe and high level multisport programmes all year round.

The three-part seminar will look at the key components of football development across South Africa at both a municipal and provincial level. It will provide strategies for local governments to achieve the ‘2030 Vision’ set out in the National Sport and Recreation Plan by the South African Government. Robin Peterson, CEO, South African Football Association Development Agency and Tim Vine, Head of Public Affairs, English Premier League will be part of the discussion. The pair will discuss how SAFA’s development plans and the Premier League’s Premier Skills Programme are helping to ensure that the correct standard of coaching and training is being delivered, as well as how new partnerships can be established with international sporting institutions.

Another highlight is Hicham El Amrani, Confederation of African Football Secretary General and Mvuzo Mbebe, 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Local Organising Committee and 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) CEO providing an official review of the 2013 AFCON as well as a preview of the 2014 African CHAN.

Domestic leagues are the bedrock of football in any country, and commercial activity is central to their development. The need to commercialise the game will be at the forefront of this year’s Soccerex African Forum with Saer Seck, President, Senegal Professional Football League, Jack Oguda, CEO, Kenyan Premier League and Stanley Matthews Sports & Commercial Director for Africa, SuperSport, all speaking on this topic. Jack Oguda commented:

Ghana FA President Nyantakyi to speak at Soccerex African Forum

Comments Off on Ghana FA President Nyantakyi to speak at Soccerex African Forum

One of the most important men in African football, Kwesi Nyantakyi, will be speaking at the Soccerex African Forum in Durban, 1-2 October.

The Ghana Football Association President and CAF Executive Committee member will provide an insight into what it means to be an FA president in Africa and the challenges involved in player development, league governance, attracting investment and qualifying for major events. Nyantakyi said:

The Forum represents an opportunity for the African football community to come together, to share ideas and to debate the important issues in the game. I’m looking forward to attending the event and discussing Ghana’s important role in developing football on the continent.

In addition to securing attractive sponsorship packages for both the national team and local leagues, the young lawyer has also made tremendous strides on the continent where he was recently elected chairman of the Fair-Play and Social Responsibility Committee and vice-chairman of the Media Committee for CAF.

Under his guidance, the Ghana national team made their first two World Cup appearances including the quarter-finals in 2010. On both occasions (2006 and 2010) they were the best African side in the world’s flagship football competition.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie said:

It’s an honour to welcome Kwesi to the Forum. Ghana’s incredible performance at the World Cup in South Africa and their rise up the FIFA world rankings is an example of the progress of African football on the world stage and the excellent work being done by the Ghana Football Association, with Kwesi at the heart of that work, makes him a perfect speaker for the Forum.

The Soccerex African Forum will bring together 1,000 senior football decision makers together with businesses from across the continent and the world for two days of unrivalled learning, networking and business opportunities to unite the business of football in Africa.
