Joint Venture partners Clark Construction Group and Mortenson Construction have been selected by GSW Arena LLC (GSW) to build the Golden State Warriors’ new sports and entertainment venue, Chase Center, in Mission Bay, San Francisco, which is scheduled to open in time for the 2019-20 NBA season.
GSW President, Rick Welts, said:
The Mortenson and Clark team combines the strengths and resources of the top sports and entertainment builders in the nation, with a long and successful history of delivering projects in San Francisco.
GSW plans to build its new state-of-the-art venue on an 11-acre site in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighbourhood. The project gained approvals late last year, and was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors in December.

This location is a perfect fit. It is an incredibly beautiful site near the Bay, in a dynamic part of the city that is convenient for fans from all over the Bay Area.
The privately-financed project includes a state-of the-art 18,000-seat arena, two office buildings, 100,000sqft of mixed-use/retail space and underground parking. More than three acres – 30 percent of the site – will be plazas, landscaping and other public spaces.

Local business and worker participation will be a priority for the construction team. Mortenson | Clark is committed to meeting San Francisco’s Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure’s (OCII) goals during the construction phase, which include 50 percent SBE firm participation and 50 percent local workforce construction-hiring.
Steve Collins, Chief Operating Officer of the new facility, advised:
The Warriors are committed to using local businesses and local workers to design, build and operate Chase Center. Already, through the design phase, we’ve awarded 40 architectural and engineering contracts with credits for SBE participation at approximately 50 percent, meeting OCII’s overall SBE goal. The actual SBE participation totals over $8 million, of which nearly 90 percent are committed to San Francisco based SBEs.
As construction begins, Mortenson | Clark will work closely with the city, OCII, and the community to keep local workers and businesses – and the community as a whole – at the forefront of the project.
With the support of GSW, Mortenson | Clark will use outreach initiatives like CityBuild to develop a comprehensive training program for San Francisco residents.
The design phase is currently underway as Mortenson | Clark and GSW Arena’s larger design group work as an integrated team to deliver the project.
With around three years to go before their new Arena is set to open, the Golden State Warriors have reached a naming-rights deal with financial powerhouse JPMorgan Chase, which will see the 18,000-seat arena called Chase Center.
Financial terms were not released, but naming-rights experts said the deal probably exceeds the high-water mark for basketball arenas as set by the USD$200m that Barclays paid to put its name on the home of New York’s Brooklyn Nets.
While naming-rights deals are not typically struck until a venue is well under construction, the fact that the Warriors are financing the arena privately gave the team incentive to strike the agreement sooner.
