  • Creates a stage-like atmosphere for fans
  • Eliminates maintenance with Musco’s long-term parts and labor warranty

The new lighting solution provided by Musco Lighting will keep the venue at the forefront of sustainable technology and innovation.

No stranger to Musco’s innovation, in 1982, Notre Dame made headlines with a televised primetime college football game held at Notre Dame Stadium made possible by Musco Mobile Lighting. Famed sportscaster, Keith Jackson recalled the event as, “The night the lights went on at Notre Dame Stadium.” But that was only the beginning of a partnership founded on a commitment to excellence, efficiency and service.

Musco installed Notre Dame Stadium’s first permanent lighting system in 1997 and has since provided lighting for Frank Eck Baseball Stadium, Melissa Cook Softball Stadium, Alumni Soccer Stadium and Stinson Rugby Field. In 2013, the university installed Musco’s LED solution at the Purcell Pavilion. For the start of the new football season, Osram is the official lighting partner of SK Rapid Wien, and will illuminate the new Allianz Stadium in Vienna, the grounds of the Austrian record holder.

The Osram subsidiary companies Siteco and Traxon will supply not only the floodlight system but also complete lighting solutions for indoor and outdoor applications, and will focus mainly on innovative and highly efficient LED technologies.

The floodlight installation consists of Siteco SiCompact R3 floodlights with 2000 W lamps from Osram and special electronic control units that illuminate the stadium in absolutely flicker-free light, a factor especially important for super slow motion sequences with HDTV broadcasting. This technology is currently being used in just a few stadiums around the world.

Heinrich Sachs, Managing Director, Austria for Osram and Siteco, said:

Our company’s managed a hat-trick, because we’re now supplying floodlight for the highly successful Vienna team for the third time in succession.

Designing sports locations efficiently and effectively with light is a main focus of Osram.

Dr. Eladia Pulido, Head of Osram Lighting Solutions, commented:

We’ve been illuminating the world’s largest sports arenas in optimum light for decades now, and we’re pleased to equip the Allianz Stadium in Vienna with the most up-to-date stadium lighting in Austria.

As a complete solution provider, we’re able to illuminate everything from a single source, ranging from parking lots and stadium facades to indoor rooms and playing fields.

This is admirably demonstrated by current reference projects such as the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain, the Melbourne Cricket
Ground/MCG in Australia and many stadiums for large football events, in fact, during 2014’s major soccer event in Brazil, seven of the twelve stadiums were equipped with Osram lighting technology.

Christoph Peschek, Executive Director of SK Rapid Wien, is highly pleased about the new partnership, as he explained:

I’m certainly happy to welcome Osram on board, an internationally-renowned and highly experienced partner. The cooperation, beginning on 1 July 2016 and currently running until June 2019, also includes advertising and marketing services.

I’m very sure that we both have a successful cooperation in front of us, and I’m happy that our green-white network has now been expanded with a further strong partner.

The Osram Lighting Solutions business division provides complete global lighting solutions for business customers with its three brands of Osram, Siteco and Traxon Technologies. The portfolio includes innovative lighting solutions for offices, industry, public buildings, retail outlets, roads and sports stadiums, as well as intelligent light management systems and services for project planning and implementation. Energy
audits, consultation and design, installation, programming, financing and maintenance are also included in the scope of services.

Hull Tigers to transform KC Stadium with computer-controlled LED floodlighting

Comments Off on Hull Tigers to transform KC Stadium with computer-controlled LED floodlighting

This July, Hull Tigers will be chalking up a home win with the addition of a state-of -the-art lighting system from Philips, a global leader in lighting. The new LED pitch lighting is designed to provide footballers, fans and TV broadcasters with the best possible experience. The investment will ensure that the KC Stadium’s sports floodlighting meets the latest TV broadcast requirements as set out by the English Premier League. The lighting will be installed during this summer’s break in time for the start of the 2015/16 football season.

The Philips ArenaVision LED floodlighting system is an innovative LED pitch lighting concept that fulfils all contemporary and future field-of-play requirements, such as light level, uniformity, glare rating and HDTV super-slow motion broadcasting. The flexible floodlighting designed and optimised for TV coverage of football and other sports events will make KC Stadium a truly multipurpose entertainment venue.

In addition, the Philips ArenaVision LED floodlighting will enhance other sport played at the KC Stadium, such as Super League Rugby and will support the local events, attractions and concerts regularly held at the venue.

The use of LED technology provides the opportunity for the Club to use lighting in a more creative way, for a completely immersive experience for spectators and players. The solution includes a dedicated user interface and a control system that allows quick, easy and reliable monitoring of the system. The ability to switch between optimal lighting configurations provides complete flexibility and the ability to switch on and off or dim each floodlight individually. With the new lighting system it will be possible to create pre-set light scenes to provide specific conditions such as dimmed energy saving levels for cleaning and maintenance purposes as well as training level lighting.

John North, Managing Director, the Stadium Management Company said:

The new state of the art, energy efficient,  LED pitch lighting system for the KC Stadium delivers the ability to instantly change from one light setting from another. This is not just a game changer for   spectators but also for the future of the modern multi-purpose stadium, a key feature of the operational strategy for our sporting venues.

The Philips ArenaVision LED control system will also be used to create special entertainment lighting effects that would normally require dedicated stage-lighting, providing the opportunity for the floodlights to be integrated into pre- and post-match light shows to help build the atmosphere and excitement in the stadium. The instant on/off nature of LED lighting even allows for the creation of a simple blackout effect if required.

Andy Gowen, Director of Public Lighting, Philips Lighting UK, said:

More than ever before lighting can add value to a stadium. The main priority for professional sports venues has always been to ensure the correct light levels on the pitch but with the arrival of the digital age, there is a great deal more on offer. Our ArenaVision LED floodlighting bridges the worlds of entertainment lighting and to date static, high quality pitch lighting to deliver a memorable experience for visitors whether they are coming to watch Hull in action or to hear their favourite bands perform.

The Club will also benefit from maintenance savings due to the exceptional long life of the LED system. Typically, metal halide floodlighting lamps should be replaced every three-seasons to maintain the lighting levels required, however, Philips LED system is expected to last in excess of ten.

The Philips

Philips ArenaVision LED lighting system will be installed at KC Stadium this summer.

The Philips ArenaVision LED floodlighting system is an innovative LED pitch lighting solution. It is designed to provide footballers, fans and TV broadcasters with the best possible experience and supports the latest Premier League requirements for TV broadcasting. I am delighted to be able to work with Philips on delivering the best possible environment for our supporters to enjoy Chelsea matches in. Once again, Chelsea Football Club is at the forefront of innovation and we look forward to many more memorable games at Stamford Bridge under this new floodlighting system.

Typically, metal halide floodlighting lamps should be replaced every three-seasons to maintain the lighting levels required. The Philips LED system is expected to last in excess of 10 seasons.

The new lighting was installed during this summer’s break in time for the start of the new football season. Its first match-day use will be on Tuesday, August 12, when Chelsea plays a friendly against Real Sociedad. In addition, the Club is upgrading its lighting at its training ground, installing the same family of Philips LED floodlighting to deliver a similar lighting performance when training as on match days. With the new system it is possible to light specific areas of the training ground to different illuminance levels to create the ideal practice environment for players.

A full article on the project will appear in our Showcase Special edition of PanStadia & Arena Management, due out this November.

Flávio Guimarães, Commercial Director of Philips Lighting Brazil, commented:

As the world leader in lighting, Philips knows that lighting is essential for high-quality TV broadcasts of soccer and other sporting events across the world. Philips has been lighting major sporting events for more than 60 years, making us a global expert in this field. In Brazil, we will use the latest innovations in lighting to make the event for fans in every seat around the pitch and for billions of viewers at home even more enjoyable.

Philips has provided ArenaVision pitch lighting that enables HDTV, 3D and super slow motion replays and has also installed lighting in the areas around the stadiums, such as the stadium façade, conference areas, shops, hospitality suites, changing rooms and the players’ tunnel.

Philips has installed the façade lighting for Rio de Janeiro’s 78,000-seat Maracanã stadium, Brazil’s most famous football venue. The indoor and outdoor technical lighting project for the stadium was created by Mingrone Iluminação, a company with a high level of expertise in lighting projects. With colourful and dynamic LED lighting, stadiums can be transformed into iconic landmarks. Stadiums can be lit in the colours of the two teams, can flash when a goal is scored or even change color to reflect the atmosphere inside – there are endless possibilities to create sporting statements and enhance the overall stadium experience. Also, such technologies can be used for non-sporting events such as pop concerts.

At Maracanã stadium, Philips LED lighting reflects the colours of the national flags for each of the teams involved in the match in its roof.

Twickenham Stadium announces installation of LED floodlights

Twickenham Stadium has this week become the first stadium in Europe to announce the installation of LED floodlights, which will be delivered by Musco Lighting.

This is part of the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) stadium redevelopment programme that is already well underway to ensure the home of England Rugby is a world-leading facility for the Rugby World Cup in 2015 and beyond.

The new LED lights will deliver superior broadcast quality lighting, as well as substantially reduce energy consumption in comparison to metal halide light sources.

Richard Knight, Stadium Director, RFU commented:

We were the first stadium in Europe to install mid-tier LEDs and believe we are now the first to have LED floodlights designed. Better quality lighting will allow us to improve the viewing experience for fans both in the stadium and at home, by keeping ahead of fast moving developments in TV technology. This innovative product also has the added benefit of being more energy efficient and requiring less maintenance.

Jeff Rogers, President of Musco, added:

Musco is proud to work with the Rugby Football Union to provide an efficient, state-of-the-art lighting solution using LED technology for this iconic stadium. The RFU’s forward thinking and concern for the responsible use of energy are commendable.

The dimming controls allow for the light output to be varied when full power of the system is not needed, saving additional energy. The floodlights will have instant on/off capabilities, allowing for special effects and eliminating the time for the lamps to warm-up. The installation also includes custom-designed reflectors that significantly reduce light spill and glare for players and spectators.

Musco is working with the RFU and their design team to design, deliver and install this state-of-the-art and sustainable lighting system at Twickenham Stadium for the autumn of 2014.
