Upgrades for Beijing’s Wukesong Sports Center

Beijing’s Wukesong Sports Center is undergoing a transformation from a basketball venue into an ice hockey arena for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.

The Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office confirmed that the arena, which was used to host basketball during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is being renovated into an 18,000 capacity ice hockey arena.

Ma Xin, deputy general manager of Wukesong Sports Center said that the arena would be remodelled according to the requirements of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

According to the requirements of the International Ice Hockey Federation, the 30m X 60m rink used in previous Winter Olympics will be changed to 26m X 60m to increase the intensity of ice hockey matches, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.

After the renovation, Wukesong Sports Center will have two types of convertible ice rinks, 30m X 60m and 26m X 60m, to facilitate the operation of the stadium after the competition.

After the Beijing Olympic Games the venue saw a great deal of use as a stadium for sports and recreational activities in Beijing.

The Winter Olympics renovation project is expected to be completed in October of this year, with test competitions planned for April 2021.
