Zenit pitch is first of a kind in Russia

The newly installed natural grass surface in Petrovskiy Stadium for Zenit St Petersburg’s season opening game against FC Kuban impressed media and players according to ENGO, the company that installed it. Stadium Director Vladimir Litvinov (pictured below middle) said:

The consortium ENGO & CRL achieved a high standard of playing surface. We believe that the Fibresand substrate technology implemented on our pitch will set a new quality level for Russian stadium grass. We have trusted our suppliers, although it was their first project in Russia. We hope to continue our co-operation.

The ENGO & CRL consortium has provided a total design, build and operate solution for the club. Richard Hayden (CRL), Project Manager (pictured below left), added:

The grow-in has been a big challenge. We have demonstrated that with a good operations team and a good client anything is possible. I’ve worked all over the world – in the FIFA World Cup South Africa, the FIFA World Cup Brazil and the UEFA EURO 2012 Poland & Ukraine tournament. We set about here to create an example of a pitch for the FIFA World Cup 2018. We wanted to prove it was possible in Russia. We even mowed the pitch in the FIFA World Cup mowing pattern for the first game. It should provide the world with confidence that Russia can and will deliver the world’s greatest pitches. This is the first step. The Russians can and will compete with the best.

The pitch was seeded and over 250 mm of rooting mass is the main reason for the excellent pitch quality. The turf has been well prepared for overwintering by groundsman Konstantin Kreminsky (pictured below right with ENGO CEO Norbert Zatko) and the rest of the ENGO support team. ENGO has set up an online communication system to monitor temperature and humidity conditions on the field, with data reachable from any location.
