Aggreko wins bid to power Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Aggreko has won the bid to provide temporary power for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

It will also become a GC2018 Official Supporter through a significant sponsorship with Australia’s largest event in more than a decade.

The contract includes powering all 18 competition venues, the International Broadcast Centre, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and other non-competition venues, such as the Commonwealth Games Village.

A team of more than 100 Aggreko engineers, project managers and global events specialists will come together from the Company’s Brisbane depot and elsewhere throughout Australia to design, manage, install and operate its generators and allied electrical distribution equipment.

Aggreko CEO, Chris Weston, said:

We are very proud to be an Official Supporter of GC2018, providing all the events temporary power requirements.

Our people on the ground in Australia, and the wider Aggreko team, look forward to working with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and helping them host a successful event.

Aggreko has been operating in Australia since 1980 and employs more than 300 people at 22 locations, with seven depots throughout Australia.

The Company was established more than 50 years ago in the UK, and has grown in experience and expertise in power generation to become the world leader and go-to provider for critical services.

A major part of the Aggreko’s business is providing power for sports events, such as the Commonwealth Games (including Glasgow 2014), Olympic Games, Cricket, Football and Rugby World Cups.

Aggreko also has a long and proven track record of providing reliable power to television shows, such as I’m a Celebrity, music festivals including Glastonbury and high-profile events like the US Presidential Inauguration.

It also provides efficient, effective modular power where it is needed across the world, including support to national grids and various industrial applications, such as mining and oil production.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie AC said in welcoming Aggreko as a Tier Two sponsor to the GC2018 Sponsor Family, that the Company brought to the Games unprecedented experience in powering major, international events around the world. He added:

The expertise and operational capabilities that the Aggreko team has in the area of temporary power delivery is critical given the absolute reliance on the system across so many GC2018 venues and operations.

The temporary power systems supplied by Aggreko will also contribute to the Commonwealth Games sustainability planning by optimising the use of existing venue power supplies and providing all additional power requirements through temporary infrastructure.

Aggreko joins an increasing number of GC2018 sponsors and reinforces through their interest and commitment the level of confidence business has in aligning their brand with the Commonwealth Games.
