New San Diego Sockers arena moves closer

Permits have been approved for an 8,000-seat indoor arena to host San Diego Sockers games, other sports events and concerts at Oceanside’s El Corazon Parkin California.

The Sockers play in the Western Division of the Major Arena Soccer League, and have represented the San Diego area since 2009.

Construction of the planned Arena Califino depends on whether the Oceanside City Council can finalise details over property rights and revenue sharing.

The Sockers currently play home games at San Diego’s Pechanga Arena, a venue that is home to minor-league hockey’s Gulls (AHL) along with indoor football and lacrosse teams, and hosts concerts and other events.

In addition to the soccer team, the new venue could host events ranging from concerts to high school sports contests and championships.

Capacity could range from 5,000-8,000 depending upon what event is taking place at the arena.

Another feature of the arena will be a 36,000-square-foot outdoor plaza on the southwest corner of the property, closest to the new aquatics center. The plaza is designed to be used for events such as receptions, concerts and theatrical performances.
