Construction work starts on Austin arena

The University of Texas at Austin has broken ground on its new basketball arena and events centre.

The University, Texas Athletics, Oak View Group, C3 Presents/Live Nation and Matthew McConaughey held the official Moody Center groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday.

In December 2018, Texas and a group led by the Oak View Group announced plans to build a new arena on campus to be home to Texas Men’s and Women’s basketball games, graduations, concerts and other events for the Austin community.

The 10,000-seat arena will provide an intimate men’s and women’s Longhorn basketball fan experience and feature student seating surrounding the court.

Much like the Erwin Center, the new venue will be a prime location for university, campus, community and high school events. Additionally, the new $338 million arena is designed to expand to 15,000 seats and will provide a world-class venue for touring concerts and shows. The Moody Center is expected to open in 2022.

Alumnus and actor McConnaughey said:

The Moody Center is going to be a place that two tremendous brands are going to be represented by – one brand being the city of Austin and the other brand being The University of Texas.

What we have to do is ensure that both of these – the city of Austin and The University of Texas – are specifically and authentically represented. For Austin, this place needs to be the first that any big band in the world wants to come play. For The University of Texas, it needs to be the very last place that any visiting basketball team wants to come play.
