Houston Strikers reveal rugby stadium plans

A newly formed rugby team in Houston, Texas, has unveiled plans for a stadium in the city as it gears up to join Major League Rugby (MLR) in 2018.

The Houston Strikers are one of the nine teams looking to take part in the new MLR competition and want to build an 11,000 seat, $10 million stadium

The other teams in the competition include Glendale, Rugby Utah, New Orleans, the Huns, the Chicago Lions, Dallas Griffins and the Seattle Saracens.

The Strikers say they are in the process of interviewing stadium contractors and that they will build the venue in sustainable phases.

A model image of the proposed 11,000 seat stadium – with two additional rugby-specific fields adjacent the stadium – has been posted on their Facebook page.

The Strikers say they will also fund local mini rugby programmes, four high school teams, and an under 20 side while supporting local clubs and colleges.

The new stadium would likely be built on a plot of land adjacent to the Houston Sports Park along TX-288 and south of Mowery Road.
