The Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park continues to prove its multi-sport credentials when it hosts BADMINTON England for the London Grand Prix Gold event 1-6 October. Meanwhile the arena : stadiummk in Milton Keynes (pictured) will host its first major sporting event, the annual National Championships, 8-9 February 2014.

Nicola Moloney, Head of Major Events and Competitions at BADMINTON England, said:

I am really looking forward to hosting the Nationals in a brand new venue which will help to promote the sport to a whole new audience. Bringing a major event to the home of badminton in Milton Keynes is very exciting and with it being the venue’s first major sporting event, it will be great to showcase the sport in a different environment.

MK Dons Chairman, Pete Winkelman, said:

It is very exciting to see tickets for the English National Badminton Championships on sale as it makes the whole thing real. It is also a great landmark for the arena : stadiummk as the Championships will hopefully be the first of many major sporting events to be held in the venue.

Temporary structures specialist Neptunus has been recognised as an official supplier to BADMINTON England for the London Grand Prix Gold event, in partnership with adidas. Neptunus will build additional temporary space to house a final warm-up court for the athletes and an interaction zone.

In a break from tradition at a BADMINTON England event, the final warm-up court will be visible to the public, so that they can observe the final minutes of training before the athletes take to the courts. Neptunus will be constructing one of its versatile Alu Halls for this purpose, which is well suited to sporting applications such as this thanks to its modular design, robust exterior and solid, level flooring.

Moloney said:

Neptunus’ help and support with providing us with a structure for our final warm-up court and interaction zone will add great quality to the event and give it a new edge compared with previous badminton tournaments.

In an exciting time for the sport, planning approval has been received for a new £22 million National Badminton Arena at The National Bowl in Milton Keynes.

Boxing a natural for Olympic’s Copper Box

The ‘box that rocks’ – the 7,000-seat Copper Box Arena which acted as the handball arena at the Olympics – is to host a series of boxing matches, beginning with Billy Joe Saunders, the unbeaten British middleweight champion. Venue operator GLL and boxing promoter Frank Warren have concluded a multi-fight agreement. Warren said:

This is a superb setting for boxing. The Copper Box is what all the investment in the Olympics was about – legacy and giving London a fantastic arena. I’m looking forward to bringing the big fights to this venue.

Dennis Hone, CEO of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, said:

This shows the Park’s true potential as a fantastic visitor destination that will leave a lasting legacy in east London.

The venue’s operator GLL already has a grassroots programme with boxing. Phil Lane, Head of Sport at GLL, said:

GLL is a strong supporter of boxing at all levels. Through our GLL Sport Foundation we provide financial and practical backing to Olympic medallists Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams and sponsor Repton Boxing Club, one of the oldest and most successful boys clubs in London.

The Copper Box Arena is the first of the permanent legacy venues to open on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (27 July 2013) and the deal for boxing has been warmly welcomed by the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) who oversee all Park activity.

Lanxess Arena and Palais Omnisport de Paris-Bercy will host the 2017 ice hockey worlds

A joint bid from France and Germany will take the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship to Paris and Cologne, the latter a well-known venue for international hockey fans. The Lanxess Arena played host to the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships in 2001 and 2010. It’s the largest venue for indoor sports by capacity in Europe offering 18,500 seats for hockey. Uwe Harnos, President of the German Ice Hockey Association, said:

Both countries have a long hockey history and the federations are working closely together. A World Championship in Paris and Cologne offers a great chance to develop our sport in France, Germany and Europe. We are looking forward to create an outstanding event for all teams and their fans with a unique atmosphere.

France has hosted the event twice, in Chamonix 1930 and in Paris 1951. 2017 games will take place in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, where the French Ice Hockey Federation started to host the French Cup Final seven years ago, and now this event sells out with 13,362 spectators. The arena will be renovated and expanded by 2015 so that it can offer seating for 15,000 fans for hockey games.

Franz Reindl, the General Secretary of the German Ice Hockey Association, who is set to assume the same role in the Organizing Committee as he did in 2010, said:

We want to have low prices and more spectators in big venues.. Tickets will be available for as little as €9 while the average price over all tournament stages and seat categories will be €39. Local transportation will be offered for free to ticketholders and participants.

Tickets will be sold centrally by CTS Eventim, which also owns the arena in Cologne. The committee calculates an attendance of 600,000 fans, with a capacity of 886,000 fans for all games.

During the 2013 IIHF Annual Congress, Latvia showed interest in bidding for 2018. Switzerland, with new arenas in Zurich and Geneva, and Slovakia, announced their intentions to bid for 2019.
