Driven by its vision to become the reference in sports excellence worldwide by 2020, Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) has inked a partnership with the STRI Group to establish a Centre of Excellence for natural sports turf research and development, which will service Qatar’s sports facilities.

According to the partnership agreement, the venture will include a 1 hectare outdoor turf research facility and a fully equipped laboratory to develop natural sports turf solutions tailored for local and regional weather systems, which require specific technology and expertise.

Together STRI and AZF will explore ways to improve the efficiency of natural turf surfaces and create optimal conditions in Qatar’s new stadiums and other sports facilities, even in harsh weather.

Commenting on the agreement, Mr. Mohammad Khalifa Al-Suwaidi, Acting CEO of Aspire Zone Foundation, said:

Guided by QNV 2030, and our mission to enhance sports performance, comes this step, which marks the latest expansion of Qatar’s booming sports industry, in order to support our ambition to make natural turf sustainable across the region. Qatar’s football industry will be the main beneficiary but we also expect golf, tennis and equestrian courses to benefit from our research and service offerings.

This alliance will help us develop Qatar and the region’s expertise in the design and management of natural turf, allowing AZF to benefit from STRI’s world leading skills in research and consulting expertise.

Lee Penrose, STRI Group Director, added:

We are delighted to have agreed a strategic partnership with AZF and keen to start working with Qatar to not only improve natural turf surface design, but also develop the country’s sports turf management capacity, as this will help Qatar to cement its position as the primary sports destination for the region.

With more than 80 years of experience, including at the last two World Cups and Olympic Games, STRI work alongside AZF to deliver the same creative but practical solutions for design, establishment and management of sports surfaces that we have been providing for sports clubs and organizations around the globe.

STRI and AZF will provide training in the region to contractors, civil servants and any other relevant organizations and will not compete with local companies. As such, this alliance will hugely contribute to Qatar’s National Vision 2030 by investing in human capital. It will develop expertise and create opportunities for Qatar’s people, enhancing the efforts of the Foundation to develop competitive infrastructure and helping to deliver an amazing 2022 FIFA World Cup.

SIS Pitches have completed work at the brand new venue, Baku Olympic Stadium – which will be featured in our forthcoming Q2/Summer ’15 edition of PanStadia & Arena Management – ready for the first ever European Olympic Games later in the year.

The SIS Eastern European team in Azerbaijan have built two brand new natural turf pitches; one training pitch and the main stadium pitch at the impressive venue.

Baku Olympic Stadium is to be used for the first European Olympic Games, with the opening ceremony taking place at the venue on 12th June 2015. The Games were designed and are to be regulated by European Olympic Committees (EOC).

The stage is currently being built over the pitch for the opening ceremony, which will see 6,500 athletes and officials in attendance, along with 5,000 volunteers and performers.

The SIS Pitches team will go in afterwards to re-turf the pitch ready for it to be used for the Games from 21st June onwards.

Following on from the Games, the venue will host games for the Azerbaijan national football team, as well as various concerts, and will fulfil FIFA’s and UEFA’s highest technical recommendations and elite stadium obligations for football stadiums.

George Mullan, CEO for SIS Pitches was very pleased to be working on this project, as he explained:

SIS Pitches are continuing to build their portfolio of work in Europe, and our team out there have already completed work in Azerbaijan, as well as Russia, Spain, Turkey and Denmark. It was great to secure this contract, and we were excited to be working on a stadium that will host the European Olympics, as well as many other sporting events.

Following the Games, both pitches will be under 12-month maintenance contracts by the SIS staff in Azerbaijan.
