2026 Asian Games bid by Japan

Comments Off on 2026 Asian Games bid by Japan

The governor of Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, Hideaki Omura, has announced that it will bid to stage the 2026 Asian Games, with the city of Nagoya proposed as the main venue.

Omura has said:

As it is a big event, we should first clarify the situation.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) will not be making a decision on the 2026 Asian Games host until around 2018.

Tokyo has previously staged the Games in 1958, with Hiroshima acting as host in 1994. Jakarta is currently confirmed to host in 2018, followed by China in 2022. However, Jakarta’s governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, is now reported as questioning the Indonesian capital’s status for the 2018 multi-sport event. Governor Basuki has suggested that he would rather see certain funds directed towards a light rail transit project, inferring that it might be preferable for Palembang to host the entire Games as an economy boost.
