Comments Off on Etihad Stadium will repeat Magic in 2014

Following a highly successful seventh Magic Weekend, the RFL has confirmed that all 14 Super League Clubs will return to the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, over the weekend of Saturday 17 May and Sunday 18 May.

The 2014 Magic Weekend will be the second year of a two-year agreement with the RFL to stage the event, with the fixtures for the weekend to be confirmed later in the year.

Manchester City Operations Director Steve Sayer said:

Now in its second consecutive year at the Etihad Stadium, It was fantastic to once again welcome back legions of Super League fans to East Manchester.  The festival atmosphere in and around the stadium not only demonstrates the passion of the fans, but also why the Magic Weekend continues to grow in popularity. It’s a privilege to host such a great event and we can’t wait to do it again in May 2014 when the Magic Weekend returns for another action packed weekend of Rugby League.

Over 60,000 fans enjoyed a superb weekend of sporting action at Magic 2013, with a programme of matches and entertainment for all the family. The new tram link to Etihad Campus made access to the stadium even easier for many fans and the Fanzone was buzzing with activity including a whole range of fun challenges run by Super League partners including Heinz, Foxy Bingo, Brut, and Irn Bru.

Rimmer to RFL Board, Rush to Saints CEO

Comments Off on Rimmer to RFL Board, Rush to Saints CEO

RFL Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer has been appointed to the sport’s independent Board of Directors. The appointment is in line with one of the key recommendations of the Watkins Review of Rugby League Governance, which was presented to clubs at a meeting of the RL Council in July 2012. The Watkins Review recommended that the Board be strengthened by the appointment of a Non-Executive Chairman and additional Executive Board members. RFL Chairman Brian Barwick said:

We are delighted to endorse the recommendation  of RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood that Ralph Rimmer be appointed to the Board.  In my brief time as Chairman I have seen the contribution Ralph makes to our organisation and his promotion is well deserved.

RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood added:

Ralph is a talented and hard-working member of the Executive. He has a deep and sincere passion for the sport, in particular for its geographical expansion and undeniably has the absolute confidence of our stakeholders.

Ralph Rimmer said:

This appointment is a huge honour for me and I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively and collegiately with all of our clubs and stakeholders to make the sport the best it can possibly be.

Mike Rush has been appointed CEO of St.Helens RFC. Rush said:

I fully believe we are entering an exciting new era at the Saints. We have a fantastic new stadium at Langtree Park and a new training facility at Cowley International College and I am sure we are now well positioned to realise the best commercial return for the club both on and off the field.

Langtree Park has suffered from problems with its roof construction but the club says it has now commenced necessary reinforcement works on the roof as part of necessary preworks to the infill cladding project.

The club said that appointed professional parties have now completed the detailed structural and design testing works on the roof and the outer perimeter zone and the requisite engineering specifications resultantly have been finalised.

The cladding and structural support works are now out to tender and a detailed timetable of project works will be announced in May. The project will be tailored to ensure no disruption on matchdays. The club has a financing package in place to meet in full the estimated costs of the project.
