Rotherham United Football Club has confirmed an early extension of its long-term, full-service contract with catering partner Centerplate – the global hospitability provider – earlier this week, which will see the firm manage public and hospitality match-day catering, as well as event sales and marketing services at the Club’s AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Originally signed for the opening of the 2012/13 inaugural season of the newly-constructed stadium, Centerplate’s contract extension comes half way through the third season of the initial five-year deal.

Tasked with supporting the mission to make AESSEAL New York Stadium a community centre, as well as a world-class event destination on match-days and beyond, Centerplate has helped to build a robust conference and banquet business; 50% of which comes from repeat bookings, with impressive double-digit returns via clients from outside the local area.

On match days, hospitality has swelled to more than 600 corporate clients, and the venue has already played host to an England vs Canada Women’s International, an England vs Germany under 18’s and an England vs Italy under 19’s international fixture.

As part of the long-term deal, investment will be made into the installation of two new kiosks in the stadium’s Ben Bennett East Stand, which will offer a variety of locally-sourced family-friendly fare when they open later this season.

In announcing the contract extension, the Club’s Commercial Director, Steve Coakley, said:

We believe that our partnership with Centerplate has played an integral role in helping us to establish a strong foundation for realising the objectives we set out to achieve for catering and hospitality services at AESSEAL New York Stadium. We’ve certainly made excellent progress since we moved to our new home and this is a great testament to both parties’ commitment to working together for the benefit of the fans and visitors to the stadium.


Club Chairman, Tony Stewart, added:

We have a great deal of faith and respect for Centerplate’s expertise and ability to develop our catering services and what better way to acknowledge the value we place on the partnership we have with them than entering into a longer-term commitment to retaining Centerplate as our catering partner.

Swindon Town Football Club and Lindley Venue Catering have signed up to a new £13 million, 10 year deal which will see Lindley’s current public matchday catering remit extended to driving all aspects of matchday and non matchday catering, as well as event management at the 15,728 capacity County Ground stadium.

Lindley Venue Catering, which recently became part of the US-based global hospitality provider Centerplate, has had a catering team established at the County Ground since 2009 when it entered into a £1.25 million five-year venture. Steve Murrall, General Manager at Swindon Town FC, said:

Over the past four years we have seen the significant benefits that Lindley Venue Catering’s experience and expertise in stadia catering has brought to our retail operation on matchdays, and we now welcome the opportunity to extend and cement our relationship with the Lindley team as we take another major step forward in putting the County Ground on the map – not just in terms of enhancing the matchday catering experience for our fans and visitors, but also attracting non matchday business and generating incremental revenue which we can then reinvest in the club.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club (GCCC) has awarded Lindley Venue Catering a six-year catering and events management contract as the club embarks on an extensive development programme at the Nevil Road ground.

GCCC has planning approval to expand and enhance the facilities at the Bristol County Ground. As well as installing a state-of-the art media centre, the development will incorporate a purpose-built conference centre aimed at benefiting the local community and businesses, and a key part of Lindley Venue Catering’s remit is to provide a comprehensive sales and marketing programme to maximise usage of the new centre.

Work began on The Pavilion – the first phase of the development which aims to increase the match-day capacity of the ground to 17,500 – in October 2012, and is expected to be completed by the end of July 2013, with the new facilities being fully operational ahead of the 2014 season in readiness for one of the prestigious England vs India 2014 fixtures. The ground is also scheduled to host an England vs Sri Lanka one-day international match in the 2016 tour.

Last summer Lindley Venue Catering was awarded a single-season contract and responsibility for managing all of the match-day and non match-day catering and events.

Pittodrie stadium is ringing to cheers of a different sort as 3,500 ale lovers descend on the venue for a major beer festival during the May bank holiday weekend.

More than 70 breweries from all over the UK will be showcasing their finest drafts during the three-day Great Grampian Beer Festival.

The stadium is welcoming back the festival for the seventh successive year – a period which has seen it grow to become one of the biggest draws on Scotland’s real ale calendar.

David McDonald, General Manager with Sodexo Prestige at Pittodrie, the football club’s catering and hospitality partner, said:

This is a long-running and highly-respected event which attracts real ale lovers from all over the north east and beyond. So we are delighted to be hosting the event again.

It is a recognition of the hard work by everyone working at the football club that the stadium is now recognised as a flexible venue which extends way beyond match days.

Richard Jones, the festival’s organiser, said:

Using the football ground makes it easy to cope with the high volume of people we have coming in and out. There is plenty of space and the facilities are modern.

Before the gates open at 4pm on 30 May, the Champion Bitter of Scotland will be announced after a blind taste of seven finalists. The winning bitter will then be on offer throughout the day alongside the 100 other specialist beverages.

Dominic ‘The Midway Gourmet’ Palmieri quickly sold out in a weekend and said his crowds clamoured for the “lip-smacking, finger-licking cotton candy.”

Delaware North Companies has joined forces with Singapore Airport Terminal Services (Sats) to provide catering and food-and-beverage services for the Singapore Sports Hub. The 21-year contract includes providing hospitality services for the hub’s retail concessions, corporate suites, members’ dining areas and special events.

Sats, through its in-flight catering joint venture in India, first collaborated with Delaware North in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, providing food at the Athletes’ Village. While Delaware North will be in charge of day-to-day operations, Sats will oversee areas such as product development, quality assurance, culinary expertise and logistics.

Costa, the UK’s largest and fastest growing coffee shop brand, is launching Costa Ice for its wholesale customers, including those in venues, who sell to consumers under the Proud to Serve (PTS) branding. The updated moniker, Costa Ice, has been introduced to provide a strong brand identity across all SKUs in the range.

Supporting PTS customers in driving sales amongst consumers looking to trade out of hot drinks during the summer months, the re-brand, along with the new The Coffee Cooler SKU will roll out from 17 May 2013.  An above-the-line marketing campaign, including outdoor and national press advertising will drive consumer awareness.

With the addition of the The Coffee Cooler, PTS customers will now be able to offer consumers three out of the four best selling Costa Ice beverages – delivering a suite of products now more aligned to the retail offer.  This also ensures Costa is able to offer PTS customers a core coffee product within each category. The Coffee Cooler will sit alongside the fruit coolers (blended with ice), as well as the ice coffees (served over ice) that are currently available to PTS customers. Simon Parton, Senior Beverage Manager, Costa UK, said:

Research amongst consumers identified a lack of understanding that the previously branded Ice Cold Costa products belonged to the Costa brand – with many also confused by the different options available.  The new branding provides a holistic identity across the range – providing a clear proposition for consumers.  With The Coffee Cooler already performing well in retail – we’re anticipating great results for PTS from this range over what we hope to be a long hot summer.

PTS customers taking up the newly branded range will be provided with Costa Ice training kits – designed to provide support and guidance to ensure customers can make the most the opportunity the range presents.  The kits include, category flyers with detailed consumer insights on buying behaviour, a DVD training aid to demonstrate how to use the blender and create recipes, sampling kits to drive trial and a comprehensive list of preferred ice suppliers for customers in need of ice storage support. Jan Matthews, CEO of RP Global was delighted to receive the Stadia Award at the Cost Sector Catering Awards earlier this month. Matthews was recognised for her role as Head of Catering Cleaning & Waste (CCW) for LOCOG where she led a team of 22,000 to design, plan, deliver and close the catering, cleaning and waste services at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Jan Matthews and David Russell will lead a seminar during Stadia & Arena 2013 in Istanbul on 23 May.

The CCW team were responsible for all the Olympic venues across London and the rest of the UK, ensuring aspirational food quality, value, visitor experience, innovation and financial benchmarks were met throughout the process. The LOCOG team were supported by leading catering and hospitality experts – The Russell Partnership – who co-authored the Food Vision for London 2012.

Following the Games, Matthews joined the Russell Partnership to head their RP Global division, applying catering and hospitality experience, to support owners and organising committees with their strategic direction, operational planning, mobilisation and effective delivery, to optimise customer experience at major events all over the world.

A couple who entrusted their entire wedding to TV funny woman Miranda Hart celebrated their first hours of married life in a luxury Scottish castle.

Delighted staff and catering experts at Dundas Castle prepared a relaxing welcome for newlyweds Claire Gilchrist and Ben Springett, to help them recover from the whirlwind of their wedding day which was organised in a single day.

The couple headed to the stunning venue at South Queensferry after Miranda organised every element of their big day – including cake, guests, bridesmaids, outfits and rings – in less than 24 hours.

More than £1 million was raised for charity by the televised wedding special with a host of celebs and other well-wishers helping ensure it was such a massive success, including Dundas Castle which laid on a two night stay for the newlyweds.

The castle is among a number of the most exclusive venues in Scotland which partner with Prestige Scotland, a specialist arm of Sodexo Prestige and the joint team laid on a memorable visit for the couple, to round off their wedding celebrations.

As well as being put up in The Boathouse a romantic retreat sitting on the loch within the beautiful grounds, the Prestige Scotland team created a breakfast hamper, boasting the finest Scottish produce.

The National Glass Centre, of the North East’s most popular tourist attractions, is to relaunch its restaurant, after awarding its catering contract to Sunderland’s 1879 Events Management.

The newly named National Glass Centre Brasserie will offer a daytime menu and open as a destination restaurant at night, with the emphasis on a menu using local and regional products.

The awarding of the contract is the latest success for 1879 Event Management, a subsidiary company of Sunderland Football Club, which has won a number of major public and private catering contracts since it was launched a year ago.

It is hoped that bringing 1879 Event Management’s expertise on board will attract new business to the National Glass Centre, which was taken over by the University of Sunderland in 2010.

Over £2m is being invested in the Sunderland-based venue to make it one of the region’s most popular visitor attractions, strengthening further the wider cultural offer in the region as well as cementing its place nationally as the national centre for glass.

Arts Council England is funding the project to the tune of £750,000, while the centre received £350,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund along with a range of donations from smaller charitable foundations.

The Victoria and Albert Museum has praised the centre’s vision and the new team leading that vision and has also expressed real interest in collaboration.
